If you're attending UCL's International Students' Orientation Programme, we can't wait to see you in town from 19 September! We know moving to a new country can be daunting, and familiarising yourself with a whole new culture can take time, but at UCLU we make every effort to help you settle in and feel right at home.
So let's get things started with this guide to our Week Zero line up of events! Can you hear London Calling?
We're starting every morning right with our series of breakfasts just for you. From 19 to 24 September, join us at the Print Room Café in the South Quad for your chance to meet fellow international students and your representative sabbatical officers. We have events for postgraduate students, women & non-binary students and student parents & carers, and you can find them all here.
Our breakfasts are also a fantastic opportunity to practice your conversational english, but if you're still struggling to make heads or tails of the lingo* come to our WALS workshop to practice your British slang & idioms.
Many of you will have travelled by plane to your new home in the UK, so you might have struggled to fit all our home comforts within a 20kg baggage allowance! If you need buy some essentials, join us on a trip to IKEA or come to our poster sale and plant sale. There's no better way to beat homesickness than by decorating your room exactly how you like it!
And what about getting out and about in the city? Our City Bike Tour will show you all the sights, and our Literary Bloomsbury Walking Tour, Musical Tour of Soho and Ghost Bus Tour are a great way to learn about the city's varied heritage. You can also join our campus tours, every day at 12pm and 2pm departing from the Main Quad.
If you're still battling jetlag, re-balance your mind, body and soul with Morning Yoga and if you fancy something a bit more low-key, why not join us for Lego Robot Making or Games Night? Our headline event in Week 0 is our infamous Boat Party and Afterparty at Rah Rah Room. Every year this is a real highlight, so you won't want to miss out.
Of course, the Welcome Festival continues in Week 1, when we bring you club nights at some of London's best venues. Our first event, Fiesta @ KOKO is definitely not one to be missed, nor is the launch of Selfie Mondays @ Sway Bar. If you're looking for something a bit different, chill out with Disco Yoga and get a taste of some real British culture with our sensational Ceilidh. Both are fantastic events for non-drinkers, with no scrimping on the excitement.
The great news is that the fun doesn't stop there. The International Students' Forum is here for you all year long; providing socials, working on campaigns and making sure your voice is heard. Find out more about our International Students' Section here.
It's a great idea to take a look at UCL's handy guides to settling in, including travelling in London, bank accounts, and keeping in touch with friends and family in the UK and back home. And if you need help with Tier 4 Visa applications, join us Monday 19 to Friday 23 September at the Bloomsbury Theatre Rehearsal Room, 10am to 4pm.
*"struggling to make heads or tails of the lingo" means to be confused by the language.
