So you’re tee-total - maybe that’s for religious reasons or just that you’re so over hangovers. Perhaps you’re not quite 18? For those who don’t drink or go clubbing, coming to university and experiencing freshers’ week can be something of a culture shock. But fear not! UCLU caters to all, and we’re here to offer plenty of non-alcohol-fuelled ways of socialising to make your Welcome Festival the greatest!
The UCLU Marquee
Events held in the marquee are all designed to be fun without alcohol - think Musical Bingo and Ice Cream Social. If it's dancing you’re after, spin yourself silly at our Ceilidh. There are so many great daytime events too, like Lego Robot Making, Tea Tasting and Disco Yoga. You can also check out events that open up the city, or bring the city to you, such as Ghost Bus tours and our Vintage Fair.
Clubs & Societies
How do you make the most of the week? In short: through Clubs & Societies. It’s all about finding people with shared hobbies - no drinking required! At UCLU we are home to over 250 student-run Clubs & Societies who run events during the Welcome period and all throughout the year. You can find a full description online at uclu.org/clubs-societies/directory, and you’d be a fool to miss our Welcome Fair on 1st & 2nd October, where you can meet members of every group.
The Volunteering Services Unit (VSU) is UCLU’s dedicated facility for students who want to get involved with volunteering projects in the local community. You can give as much or as little time as you can spare; learning new skills, making friends, and contributing to other people's lives. Volunteering is a fantastic way to do something pro-active.
Give it a Go
Give it a Go provides an exciting programme of one-off events for all UCL students. It’s a convenient and affordable way of taking a leap into the unknown and doing something you’ve never done before! Best of all, it’s for UCL students so it’s a great way to meet new people at university. The scheme offers discounted trips, tours of London and theatre tickets all year round!
New this year, Project Active will have a huge line up of mass participation sports events. UCLU’s Project Active offers you a wide range of opportunities to be active, try new things, spend time with friends or meet new ones, develop skills, and balance the demands of student life with a happy and healthy lifestyle.
If you do enjoy a drink, remember to do so responsibly. You can check out our short guide to consuming alcohol here.
*Unfortunately, external club nights such as Fiesta @ KOKO, Selfie Mondays @ Sway Bar, Ibiza Zoo Party @ Scala, Campfire Cocktails with Midnight Apothecary @ The Brunel Museum and the Freshers’ Ball @ Ministry of Sound are strictly 18+. It’s a condition of their license :(
